Gullible

Rosemary Kubli

Genre: Suspense

Even the most cunning femme fatale has her weakness

Siena Ricci is shrewd, seductive, and an expert in the art of deception. Masking her identity behind the guise of Marie Lacroix, a specialist in antiques and objets d'art, she swindles her employer's wealthy clients out of their valuable possessions. She hasn't yet met the man she can't manipulate, but then the con she's playing on Jonathan Woodward has only just begun.

Jonathan proves to be an easy mark, but he's also enticingly irresistible. As their relationship heats up, her plot to steal his multi-million-dollar antique trinkets begins to unravel. Noticing a subtle change in Jonathan's demeanor, Marie questions whether she's still in control of the con or if she's blindly become the gullible victim of her own scheme.

When Marie was certain Jonathan had fallen asleep, she disentangled her body from his and inched away, making sure the Somerset Necklace she was still wearing didn’t catch on the bedding. As Jonathan mumbled something unintelligible and rolled onto his side, she slipped out from under the covers and slinked across the bedroom. She opened the dressing room door just wide enough to squeeze through the opening. Her movement activated the overhead lights.

Lifting the lid of her suitcase, she opened the same concealed compartment where she’d hidden the Bird Pistol yesterday afternoon. Removing a soft cloth bag, she unfastened the drawstring, held the bag up by its bottom end, and shook out the fake necklace Gus had so expertly crafted. Setting those items on top of the dresser, she attempted to blindly unhook the Somerset Necklace.

The clasp proved to be more difficult to negotiate than she’d anticipated. Its old-fashioned design was tricky and one she wasn’t accustomed to handling. She hurried to the full-length mirror affixed to the wall and twisted the necklace around so she could determine how the mechanism worked. After a few failed attempts, the clasp at last released. Tiptoeing back to her suitcase, Marie was unexpectedly consumed with guilt. She’d fretted for weeks over not being able to obtain the necklace. Now that it was in her hands, she questioned whether she could go through with the job.

A month ago, when she and Gus concocted their scheme, she hadn’t anticipated falling in love with her target. Since meeting Jonathan, she’d shed the hard-hearted, deceitful persona she hid behind in order to perform the deeds required of an expert con artist. Jonathan had awakened her conscience and made her realize it was time to right her wrongs.

So, what are you going to do? Follow your heart and sacrifice the job in deference to the man you love, or stick with the plan out of loyalty to Gus?

Marie had lingered in the dressing room long enough for her absence to be noticed.

“Marie? Are you all right?” Jonathan’s groggy voice called out.

“Yes, I’m fine,” she replied. Time had run out and she had to make a choice.

Together, Coyote and Sabine sort the snarled web of lies and deceit while struggling to maintain their personal space. Failure to thwart the ingenious killer could result in untraceable mass murders spanning the continents.

Prologue Death, like reality, comes in layers. He was a scientist. Confidence and conviction in facts with distinct slices of possibilities for future endeavors kept him focused and thinking forward.

To delve into the mind and alter the truth as one knew it, everything they touched, heard, saw, and perceived, was his bailiwick. The realm he’d perfected.

Yet at the moment, confusion submersed him in a world he didn’t recognize. Scenes flashed not just before his eyes, but encompassed his entire existence and touched every sense. How could he discern reality from illusion?

He remembered sitting at his desk in his home away from home. Then a noise. A flash of pain in his head. Someone laughed as they threatened him, demanding his precious work. They spoke with ruthless assurance as they penned a note and stuck it to his chest.

Yet he wasn’t dying, nor did he feel the impending doom of a gun to his head.

What he did feel was the briefest flicker of pain flashing through both lower legs before dissolving into thousands of pins-and-needles sensations.

Warmth flooded his brain, followed by a tranquilizing calm soothing his anxiety. Wasn’t that his area of expertise?

Muddled and conflicting sensations diminished with the tingling heat spreading throughout his chest and permitted a deep breath. Phantom shadows of panic receded to the periphery of his thoughts, pushed out by increasing perceptions of rightness that shouldn’t exist in his world.

His mind struggled to remember what he’d intended to do. He’d intended to remove his VR goggles to make an adjustment, hadn’t he? Then why did the softness of his mattress beneath his thighs feel so right? He didn’t have a bedroom in his satellite office.

His feet weren’t chilled from the cool tile floor, nor did he recognize the setting from his bedroom window.

He lived in a modest contemporary rancher with his wife, newlyweds of less than a year. Their cozy structure was surrounded by two acres of St. Augustine Grass. The closest neighbor enjoyed a Spanish Revival house with a low-pitched tile roof, half-round arched doors, and windows with adobe brick.

He saw none of it.

Instead, miles of beautiful flowerbeds with blooms that shouldn’t appear in December sprawled over lush hills, another topographical feature absent from southern Florida. Despite conflicting perceptions, he couldn’t muster the energy to tear his gaze away. Inability to turn his head soon lost meaning in the wake of the bouquet of scents wafting through the open window.

He knew the soft, sweet taste of each blossom as if they rested on his tongue, sweet with a tinge of some exotic spice. Bird song encouraged him to linger and ignore unpleasant sensations of forced immobility. There existed no obvious reason to move or feel concern.

A slight breeze ruffled his hair, its warmth another source of soothing calm. He hadn’t been wearing his glasses, yet could see flowers glistening with morning dew in crystal clarity, the fine stamens stark against the velvety texture of each petal. The pad of each fingertip tingled with their softness despite the distance that lay between him and the outdoors.

Every cell of his body felt cocooned in a warm fuzzy blanket.

Nirvana was confirmed as his mind flashed to a different landscape, yet it didn’t appear to be a dream. Everything felt so vivid, so real.

Before him, the soft ocean surf lapped at his feet, the sand warm between his toes and the gentle susurration a colorful melody. Pungent scents of salt and copper filled his nostrils and he briefly held his breath until it passed. Calm, balmy breezes whispered through nearby feathery palms and whisked the unpleasant aromas away.

If he died and was lucky enough to see pearly gates, this was where he wanted to stay. Life’s concerns drifted on a sea of contented bliss.

He briefly closed his eyes in ecstasy. The sudden spray of salt water against his cheek snapped them open to look over the deck of a large ship. The rolling motion forced him to grab the railing to either side of him and clutch tight. Knowledge that there should only be one rail before him didn’t prevent his grasp for dear life.

Something tugged against his legs and belly. He thought to rub it then decided it unnecessary as his spirit drifted above the beauty of roiling seas below him.

A peculiar numbness infiltrated his lower legs, followed by a lightheadedness not overcome by the pleasant tingling at the base of his skull. He rarely felt the bite of cold under his skin in southern Florida.

Perhaps he’d take a nap and let the strange sensations pass.

'Tis hardly a romantic beginnin'. 😉 Happy Weekend, folks!

Extract - The Devil Take You

A plume of black smoke rose over the burm, swirling into the sky.

“Dear God, not again.” Brae dropped the bouquet she had been fashioning and ran, perhaps stupidly, toward the village. Even with the wind whistling through her ears, the commotion and terror-filled shrieks of the town folk still reached her.

With her attention focused on locating her family, Brae didn’t hear the horses behind her until the last second.

All of a sudden, her feet lost contact with the damp earth. She choked on a scream as some unknown assailant grabbed her by the hair and plucked her from the ground. The destrier never slowed its pace as she dangled precariously in midair.

In agony, Brae clamped her hands on either side of her head—her scalp threatened to peel away from her skull.

The kidnapper hauled her up in front of him and body slammed her stomach-first onto the horse’s back. Brae’s breath rushed from her lungs at the force. She bunched her hand into the rider’s enormous black cloak and hung on for dear life.

While she struggled to breathe, the brigand wrapped his rather large leather-clad hand around her backside.

“This one be mine!” The sound of his deep voice chilled her. By his accent, he was English! Braelynn closed her eyes and recalled the warnings from Callum and her da. Had her own father’s words cursed her? Was she to learn the lesson the hard way?

She was afraid to open her eyes, but she knew by the smell stinging her nose that they were close to the source of the acrid smoke.

The horses came to an abrupt halt. Brae barely had time to register the fact when someone from behind grabbed her by the ankles and attempted to rip her from her captor’s lap.

“She be mine,” her captor growled.

To her horror her skirt rode high.

“I want her!” the second brigand responded while caressing her bare leg. Brae’s skin crawled.

In terror, she stared up at the raider holding her while the other slid his rough hands ever higher up her plaid.

Leather creaked when her captor leaned in the saddle. He placed one large booted foot in the center of his rival’s chest and shoved. At once, Brae’s lower body dropped as he fell backward from the blow. Her arms pulled taut, stretching painfully, supporting her weight.

Without warning, the man holding her suddenly released his grip. Brae slid down the horse’s side and fell to the ground with a thud in a tangle of voluminous skirts. She did not wait to disentangle herself but seized the opportunity to flee. She leapt to her feet intending to run, but her captor was faster. He grabbed her by the hair yet again. Circling it around his hand, he reeled her in.

“Not so fast, Caileag.” He sneered the last as if it were a nasty word. “You and I have some business to attend.”

Reviews:

A story that ranks with those of Jude Deveraux and Nora Roberts ~ Goodreads

This book was wonderful in so many ways. Feisty heroine, brooding hero, historical facts woven into the plot, descriptions of sweeping landscapes, drama and intrigue. ~ Goodreads

What a fabulous, well crafted story! I could hardly put it down. I love Brae as much as I loved Holly in the Always Cambridge series. They’re not the same character at all, but Brae is just as spunky, brave, creative, smart and grounded. ~ from the editor

Based on the blurb I wasn’t sure if I would like Braelynn. I like my female characters a bit tougher than she sounded. Boy, was I fooled! The book starts off with a bang, Braelynn sending messages for the rebels. From here it’s a wild ride of fantastic Scottish accents, action and romance. Gard is a great character as well. I really felt his need for revenge and his struggle with his feelings for Braelynn. If you’re a fan of Scottish romance this should be on your to be read list! ~ Bella The TBR Pile

The prose is fresh, witty, and charming.
I’ll start by saying this was an AWESOME read. I really enjoyed it.
...The setting is rich and detailed. I felt as if I was in Scotland.
...There’s also a bonus of history in the novel. It was wonderful to learn as I read.
...I loved the characters. Brae was feisty and outspoken, but also grieving much loss. She was true to the women of her time. Gard came in the form of black death. But there was a gentleman lurking beneath his devilish exterior, that he stifled, even fought to conquer. But Brae is his weakness so he engages in a battle of wills with himself. He has a mission to complete, and he’s determined not to be side-tracked because of Brae.
...The secondary characters were given the same developmental care as Brae and Gard.
...The plot is bang on. Besides the romance between Brae and Gard, there is mystery, there are quests, and the author ties this all up beautifully at the end.
...The pacing never slows.

Chapter 8

Willow was told that at some time during the night, she had sleepwalked her way out of her room and down a series of corridors, managing to slip into the service elevator undetected and find her way into the vast basement area a floor below the morgue. She'd traveled so far down underground that she'd been discovered in the maintenance section; the area where medical waste was stored until pickup.

Back in her room and safely in her hospital bed, Willow fought the tendrils of sleep as she sat surrounded by her sketches. Her hands and fingers moved of their own accord. Lines, curves, and soft edges blurred together to form an outline of the face that haunted her. She grabbed another piece of paper and started another sketch; her soul bleeding out onto the paper in shades of gray and black, soft and hard edges, smudged, defined curves and lines forming a heart surrounded by flowers captured inside a birdcage made of rib bones.

Nurse Benson entered with a tray of hot soup. “Willow? I thought you should eat before you sleep,” she said in her ever calming voice.

Willow half smiled back at her and pulled the blankets over the sketches as if ashamed of the secret she didn't quite understand.

“I’m okay, thank you, Bertha.”

Willow and Nurse Benson had become good companions in the last three weeks. Bertha was an older lady, who had no children of her own. Her husband had passed almost four years ago. Taking care of Willow was her latest purpose in life. Even after her shift ended Bertha came to spend time with Willow every lunchtime, bringing homemade cookies and sometimes bread with her. Willow hadn't the heart to tell her that her baking was awful. And Bertha's friendship was a welcome reprieve from the boredom of the endless days in hospital.

“Why are you really here, Bertha? Willow asked as the nurse stood with an expression of someone keeping a secret they were looking to relieve themselves of.

“I’m that obvious, huh?”

She placed the soup on the eating tray and wheeled it over to Willow.

Willow smiled, and adjusted her position on the bed as the delicious smelling soup got wheeled her way.

“I feel awful that I didn’t notice you were gone last night,” Bertha said, unpacking a spoon wrapped in a napkin from her purse.

“It’s not your fault,” Willow took a deep smell of the soup and her stomach growled.

“My child, in your condition you could have died! I feel terrible. Your immune system…”
Willow interrupted her. “Bertha, if heart failure couldn’t take me out, what makes you think anything else could?” She grinned sheepishly as she dipped into her soup.

Bertha gave a tight smile.

“I’m not sure what happened,” Willow said between spoonfuls. The soup was as almost as delicious as it had smelled.

Bertha sat down on the edge of her bed. “It’s not the first time you’ve left your room like that,” she began.

Willow’s eyes narrowed on Nurse Benson, the spoon suspended midair. “You never said anything before. I don’t have a record of sleepwalking…?”

Nurse Benson took a napkin from her Mary Poppins like bag and tucked it in the collar of Willow's gown.

“You need to slow your words, child. You know that accent of yours can be hard to understand.” She sat back with her hands in her lap.

She looked at Willow, "Don't worry yourself about the sleepwalking, it will blow over. A heart transplant is a serious trauma to the body and mind child."

She tipped her head to the side. “Stranger things have happened to heart recipients before.”
Willow arched her eyebrow in question.

“How about I bring you some articles about it?” Bertha offered.

“Ja, Sure.”

She took another spoonful of soup. Her big green eyes searching out the nurse’s. It wasn’t the best soup she’d tasted, but it was made with love, and that in itself made each spoonful feel like it was calming from the inside. Nurse Benson took her chart from the foot of the bed, noticing the shift-nurse had given her a mild sedative. She looked up and smiled at Willow.

They fell quiet as the sounds of the slow beeping machines coming from other rooms filled the space. Nurse Benson shifted uncomfortably on the bed, not sure if she should tell Willow that she was concerned about her symptoms after all. Instead, she decided to give the girl the rest she needed. The sooner she got out of the hospital the better for everyone involved in Willow’s transplant. As sad as it was to see her go, it was a case of moving on and forgetting.

Standing from the bed, she sighed and said, "You should get some rest,"

Adjusting the strap of her purse. “You need your sleep.”

She returned to clasping her hands before her, reminding Willow of a sweet old church lady, which she knew she wasn’t. She’d seen bertha throw enough tantrums, often swearing at the staff.

Willow watched after Bertha as she made for the door.

“I don’t want to sleep. What if it happens again?” she asked Bertha.

Dropping her eyes as she felt the shame of sounding like a frightened child; the last thing she wanted when her recovery was about finally becoming an abled adult.

Bertha stopped at the threshold and smiled warmly.

“Do you need me to stay?” she asked, almost as if she’d been expecting it.
"I won't let you wander off again, child."

Willow felt pathetic, she shrugged and answered shyly, “Ja, you can’t guard me all the time…”

“Oh. Yes. I. Sure. Can.” Bertha chucked her purse across the room where it landed perfectly on the sofa-chair.

Willow gave a soft chuckle, almost choking on the soup.

Nurse Benson walked over to Willow, hitting her on her back, “Easy child, breathe.”

Willow gasped, taking in a breath before the laughter erupted again. Nurse Benson removed the soup from her tray.

"Okay, I think your meds have taken effect."

“This is me, happy, funny me.”

Bertha wiped her bangs from her face and smiled down at Willow. “If I’d ever had a daughter, I’d have liked her to be just like you.”

Willow closed her eyes for a moment, feeling a swell in her throat.

“We'd make an odd combo, you and me.”

“Why’s that?” Bertha stared at her through her lashes.

Willow fell back into her pillows. “Well, I don’t really eat baked goods, and you seem to bake, like, a lot. And well I just keep eating them because...” she blushed at her confession.
The medication had taken hold and her thoughts were suddenly outspoken and as if coming from someone else.

Nurse Benson stifled a laugh. “I wondered when you would actually say something.”

“You sabotaged my cookies intentionally then?” Willow’s tongue was starting to drag.
She blinked, trying to push away the fog creeping over her.

“Stay with me please?” she pleaded, her eyes finally drooping.

Bertha took her hand.

“I will. You don’t have to be scared.”

“Okay.” Willow’s eyes shut as the drowsiness took over.

“Oh, and please check in on Tyler in room…” she said, lids still closed.

“I know. You do not have to worry about him. I’ll let him know you’ll visit him soon.”

Willow tried to put up one last fight against the sleep, having this overwhelming feeling, as if she might never wake up the same again. First she had to say one more thing to Bertha, just in case she didn’t make it back to reality.

“Bertha,” was all she got out.

What she had wanted to tell her was, how scared she had been about what she’d seen and felt in that basement. But she’d slipped into sleep too soon with the ominous feeling pursuing her. Singed behind her lids was the non-distinct face that stood out in the shadows of that basement. A face that only she had seen - with it the overly encroaching feeling, like one she’d never experienced before. The haunting face was somehow part of her now.
